The surface is finished with a technique called nuno bari (cloth covered), in which the surface is covered with cloth to increase strength and add a fabric pattern, creating a traditional texture. The lacquer finish is suri urushi (wiped lacquer), which means that the black lacquer applied as a base is visible in places
